Marilyn J. Mullins, age 86, of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away Saturday, July 9, 2011 at the Creighton Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. Marilyn Jean Mullins was born June 4, 1925 in rural Essex, Iowa the daughter of Clarence and Helen (Jackson) Burg. She graduated from Coburg High School in 1942 and attended Business School in Chillicothe, Missouri. This is where she met Irvan P. Mullins. They were united in marriage on May 1, 1944 at the Burg family home near Essex. During World War II, while Irvan served his country, Marilyn worked for the WPA Ration Board. Upon Irvan’s return they started farming on what the family knew as the “middle place”. They later moved to the Burg family “home place” where Marilyn and Irvan raised their family. Marilyn was always very active in her church, the Climax United Methodist Church as well as the First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, and the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed bowling, playing cards, crocheting, and embroidery. She was known to her family as the “Rock” and “Foundation” leading her family by example. She was always known to be kind hearted and honest. Marilyn always encouraged her children to grow and follow their dreams throughout life, never holding them back. Irvan and Marilyn moved into Red Oak in 1973 where Marilyn worked for many years for Arney’s Hallmark and later Rod’s Hallmark.
