Elizabeth M. Richards, age 98, of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, February 16, 2011 at the Red Oak Rehabilitation and Care Center. She was born Elizabeth Eunice Miller on March 27, 1912 in Providence, Rhode Island to Dr. Albert Heircy Miller and Ada (Holding) Miller. She graduated from Lincoln School in Providence in 1930 and Radcliff College (Harvard) in 1934. Elizabeth was united in marriage to Jonathan Barlow Richards on October 1, 1935. Jonathan and “Betsy”, as she was called, lived most of their married life in Red Oak, Iowa. Jonathan preceded her in death on July 27, 1986. Betsy was past President of the Nishnabotna Girl Scout Council; Secretary of the Iowa Democratic State Central Committee; a charter member of the National Organization of Women; and active member of the local University Women, Planned Parenthood, Monday Club and a faithful member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ here in Red Oak.

Betsy was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Jonathan B. Richards; and daughter: Victoria Powell Richards Bastron. Survivors include her children: Jonathan Barlow Richards II “Jack”; Kathleen Miller Richards; and Charles Emery Richards and wife DyAnn, all of Red Oak, Iowa; grandchildren: Elizabeth Richards Posont and husband Joe of Lincoln, Nebraska; James Tracy Richards and wife Jacque of Johnston, Iowa; Mary Louise Richards-Lindeke and husband Martin of Eagle River, Alaska; Jennifer Richards Hamilton of Honolulu, Hawaii; Jonathan Barlow Richards III of Omaha, Nebraska; Paul William Richards and wife Diane of Des Moines, Iowa; and Jeffrey Martin Richards of Seattle, Washington; four great grandchildren; sister: Kathleen Miller Barry of Davis, California, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and lifetime friends here and around the country.

Private family graveside memorial services will be held at a later date at the Evergreen Cemetery in Red Oak, Iowa. Memorials are suggested to the Iowa Public Television, Lincoln School in Providence, Rhode Island, or the Planned Parenthood.
