Margaret J. Miller age 86 of Elliott, Iowa passed away Friday, July 30, 2010 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital. Margaret Jean Miller was born December 18, 1923 in rural Elliott, Iowa the daughter of Harry C. and Edna (Hand) Welsch. Margaret grew up on the Welsch family farm with her parents and brothers, Charles and Frederick Welsch, where she mastered the art of shelling corn, dressing chickens and was recruited by her brothers to play on their neighborhood baseball team. She attended and graduated from Elliott High School in 1941. While in school, Margaret was an outstanding athlete and excelled at basketball. After high school Margaret attended Normal Teacher Training in Red Oak. She began her teaching career in country schools. She also taught in Elliott and Stennett retiring from the Griswold School District in 1985 after 34 years of teaching. Margaret married Max L. Miller on June 22, 1947 at the Elliott Church of Christ in Elliott, Iowa. They made their home on the Miller Family Farm northwest of Elliott. To this union three children were born Marla Lee and twins Douglas and Dennis. Along with teaching, Margaret helped Max on the farm raising chickens, walking beans and helping with the crops. She and Max also owned and operated Miller Farm Supply in Elliott for over 40 years. Margaret was a lifelong member of the Elliott Church of Christ where she served as Junior Choir Director, the adult Sunday school teacher, church deaconess for over 50 years and the church pianist. She was also a member of the “Pink Pudgies” and Christian Women’s Fellowship. Margaret and Max enjoyed square dancing and were on a bowling league. They also enjoyed vacationing at Little Pine Lake in Perham, Minnesota, driving through the mountains of Colorado and most recently wintering in Mesa, Arizona. Margaret enjoyed cross stitching, knitting, raising a vegetable garden and several flower gardens. Her therapy was to mow her four acre yard, watching The Price Is Right, the LA Lakers, Monday Night Football and Lawrence Welk. Her true passion was spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, her infant twin sons Douglas and Dennis in 1954, her brothers Charles in 1987 and Frederick in 2005. She is survived by her best friend and husband of 63 years Max L. Miller of Elliott, Iowa; daughter, Marla Turner and husband Doug of Elliott, Iowa; four grandchildren, Michelle Cross and husband Chuck of Indianola, Iowa; Barb Gilliland and husband Toby of Red Oak, Iowa; Dawn LeRette and husband Brian of Red Oak, Iowa and Mark Turner of Elliott, Iowa; seven great grandchildren, Mitch, Chase and Megan Cross; Danielle, Tanner and Jaydan Gilliland and Joshua LeRette; sister-in-law, Regina Welsch of Red Oak, Iowa many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held 11AM, Wednesday, August 4, 2010 at the Elliott Church of Christ in Elliott, Iowa with Rev. Mel Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery in Elliott, Iowa. Visitation with the family will be held from 7 – 8 PM Tuesday, August 3, 2010 at Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel in Red Oak, Iowa. Memorials are suggested to the Elliott Church of Christ or the Elliott First Responders.
