Harry James Shaffer, age 92, of Emerson, Iowa passed away, Sunday, April 18, 2010 at his home in rural Montgomery County. Harry James Shaffer was born November 6, 1917 in Montgomery County, Iowa the son of John and Harriett (Lake) Shaffer. After his school years he started farming with his father. In 1939, he began farming on his own. On October 7, 1948, Harry was united in marriage to Merle Jean Lister in Rock Port, Missouri. They lived and farmed in West Township of Montgomery County until the present time. Harry loved the farm and being outdoors, enjoyed listening to Ray Price music, enjoyed being with family, spent many hours mowing in the past several years, loved riding around the farm on the Kubota, loved farm sales and auctions, and was very proud of all of his children and grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents; sons: John and Paul Shaffer; granddaughter: Angela Fisher; and sisters: Gayle Swanson and Jean Hughes. Survivors include his wife: Merle Jean Shaffer of Emerson, Iowa; children: Carroll Shaffer and fiancée Carla Barker of Red Oak, Iowa; Ruth Owens and husband Bill of Stanton, Iowa; and Nancy Nickolaison and husband Ron of Red Oak, Iowa; daughter-in-law: Mary Kay Shaffer of Omaha, Nebraska; 7 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; numerous step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren; sisters: Doris Towne of Corning, Iowa; Blanche Sederburg and husband Milo of Omaha, Nebraska; and Ruby Lister of Red Oak, Iowa; many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held 2 PM Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 12:30 PM until 2 PM Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the family.
