Jean D. Hankins, age 78, of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away Friday, February 26, 2010 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital. Jean Diane Hankins was born April 28, 1931 near Nodaway, Iowa the daughter of Ralph and Jennie (O’Riley) Steadman. She graduated from Nodaway High School in 1948 and was united in marriage to Glenn Binns in 1949 in Nodaway. Four children were born to this union: Dennis, Jane, James, and Audrey. She later married Eldon “Smiley” Hankins in 1968 in Omaha, Nebraska. A daughter, Kimberly, was born to this union. Jean lived most of her life in the Red Oak area where she and Smiley operated the Hamm’s Beer Distributorship and Johnny’s Steakhouse for several years. She also worked at D & L Company and eventually Parker-Hannifin Company where she retired in 1993. After retirement, Jean worked part time for the Red Oak Tap. Jean loved fishing, camping, cooking, and just visiting with friends and family. She also loved her dog, Angel, and was very active in the Relay for Life.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband: Eldon "Smiley" Hankins on January 4, 1996; her son: James Binns on February 3, 2007; her sisters: Mia Shipman and husband Gordon and Helen Roby and husband Clyde; and her brother: Bill Steadman. Survivors include her children: Dennis Binns and wife Sue of Red Oak, Iowa; Jane Franks and husband Randy of Red Oak, Iowa; Audrey Nielsen and husband Bob of Council Bluffs, Iowa; and Kimberly Euken and Doug Bennett of Red Oak, Iowa; daughter-in-law: Brenda Binns of Red Oak, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; 6 great great grandchildren; sister: Loraine Foutch of Shenandoah, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held 2 PM Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel with Rev. Elizabeth Dilley officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 6-8 PM Tuesday, March 2, 2010 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the family.
