Elma V. Hockenberry, age 92, of Red Oak, Iowa passed away, Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital. Elma Veva Hockenberry was born September 28, 1917 in Mills County, Iowa the daughter of William Ellsworth and Veva Ellen (Kelso) Judah. She was raised in Mills County and graduated from the Strahan High School in 1935. After high school she cleaned houses and also had a restaurant in Malvern before moving to California. In California she met David Hockenberry and they were married on September 11, 1945 in Redwood City. They moved to Ohio for a short time before moving back to Hastings, Iowa in 1948 and then Red Oak, Iowa in 1964. Elma worked for a very short time at the Union Carbide and was a homemaker. She enjoyed tending to her flowers and collecting dolls. Elma treasured the time she spent with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband: David Hockenberry on September 3, 2002; sisters: Mildred Taylor and Helen Schneider; and brothers: William, Byron, and Roy Judah. Survivors include her daughters: Janie Peterson and husband Curtis of rural Red Oak, Iowa; Joyce Wake of Red Oak, Iowa; grandchildren: Carrie Shalters, Amanda DeVito, Michael Cox, Joseph Hensel, Jered Reed, Scott Peterson, Michael Peterson, and Curtis Peterson, Jr.; numerous great grandchildren; sister: Marvel Ransford of Vincennes, Indiana; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held 11 AM Saturday, January 23, 2010 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel with Rev. Elizabeth Dilley officiating. Visitation with the family will be held from 10-11 AM before the funeral service. Cremation will take place after the services and burial of the cremated remains will be in the Evergreen Cemetery at a later date. A memorial fund is being established in Elma’s name.
