Bertha M. “Betty” Confer, age 73, of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away Sunday, December 6, 2009 at the Nebraska Methodist Hospital in Omaha. Bertha Marie “Betty” Confer was born December 6, 1936 in Omaha, Nebraska the daughter of Aage and Gladys Reta (Olsen) Andersen. The family moved to Red Oak, Iowa in 1947 and Betty graduated from Red Oak High School in the class of 1954. She moved to Omaha and attended college and later worked as a medical secretary for a doctor. Betty was united in marriage to Jack Confer on February 9, 1958 in Red Oak, Iowa. Betty was a homemaker and helped Jack on the family farm. Jack preceded her in death on May 7, 2004. Betty moved into Red Oak in 2009. She was a longtime member of the Hawthorne United Methodist Church where she served as a member and treasurer of the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, the United Christian Women, and attended Community Bible Study. Betty was very kind hearted and was always willing to help out anyone in need. She will be missed by all who knew her.
Preceding her in death were her parents; brother: Arnold Andersen; and husband: Jack Confer. Survivors include her children: Kerry Confer and wife Amy of Emerson, Iowa; Keith Confer and wife Colleen of Glenwood, Iowa; Ken Confer and wife Wendy of Stanton, Iowa; and Kelli Confer of Red Oak, Iowa; grandchildren: Matt Confer of Red Oak, Iowa; Mark Confer of Elkhorn, Nebraska; Liz Confer of Fremont, Nebraska; Katelyn and Kiersten Confer of Glenwood, Iowa; Cassie Gilliland of Stanton, Iowa; Cade and Marcel Confer of Stanton, Iowa; and Marissa Williams of Red Oak, Iowa; brothers: Robert Andersen and wife Rhoda of Karnack, Texas; Gene Andersen and wife Jeannie of Crossville, Tennessee; and Donald Andersen and wife Linda of Oskaloosa, Iowa; sisters: Rose Lewis and husband Keith of Red Oak, Iowa and Donna Mae Blay and husband Frank of Twin Falls, Idaho; brother-in-law: Glen Confer and wife Carolyn of Essex, Iowa; nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held 10 AM Friday, December 11, 2009 at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Jan Phillips officiating. Burial will be in the Emerson, Iowa Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 5-7 PM Thursday, December 10, 2009 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to the Hawthorne United Methodist Church.
