James T. Askey, age 79, of Red Oak, Iowa passed away Thursday, December 3, 2009 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. James T. Askey was born July 11, 1930 in Montgomery County, Iowa the son of Robert Clark and Dorothy Ann (Lloyd) Askey. He attended school in Coburg until the age of 9 when the family moved to Red Oak. He graduated from Red Oak High School in the class of 1949. Jim then served in the United States Navy for one year returning to Red Oak where he started working for Union Carbide Battery Company. He moved to Loveland, Colorado where he worked for an implement dealer as a mechanic and was united in marriage to Wilma Mitchell in 1954. After their marriage they returned to Red Oak and Jim worked for Don Gell Motors for a short time before working in the Askey Feed Store and eventually became a partner. Wilma preceded him in death in 1964. After closing the feed business, Jim worked for Mace and Hahn Implements and later started his own tractor repair business as well as running a corn sheller. Jim was united in marriage to Donna Foes Shrum on January 14, 1966 in Omaha, Nebraska. They lived on a farm near Stanton, Iowa from 1967 until 1984 when they moved back to Red Oak. Jim was a former member and officer of the Red Oak Eagles Lodge. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and watching football, especially the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Chicago Bears.

Preceding him in death were his parents; first wife: Wilma Askey; brothers: Clarke, Thomas, and Donald Askey; sisters: Virginia Askey and Roberta Moore; son: Donald Shrum; and grandson: Shane Shrum. Survivors include his wife: Donna Askey of Red Oak, Iowa; children: Deb Kirchner and husband Kelvin of Braddyville, Iowa; Pam Miller formerly of the Red Oak and Stanton area; Charles Shrum and wife Deb of Villisca, Iowa; and Mike Askey and wife Linda of Red Oak, Iowa; 12 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; brothers-in-law: Ed Moore and wife Jean of Shenandoah, Iowa and Richard Foes of Junction City, Kansas; nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends.

Memorial services will be held 2 PM Monday, December 7, 2009 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel with Pastor Jerry Lamb officiating. Burial of the cremated remains will take place at a later date in the Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 2-4 PM Sunday, December 6, 2009 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the family.
