Ruth L. Tornholm, age 85, of Red Oak, Iowa passed away Sunday, July 30, 2006 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak. Ruth Lenore Radke Tornholm was born September 8, 1920 in Clarinda, Iowa the daughter of E. E. “Dutch” and Celesta(Bartlett) Radke. At the age of 12, Ruth was baptized and became a member of the Christian Church in Clarinda. She attended the Clarinda Public Schools graduating in 1937. Upon graduation she was employed by the Iowa-Nebraska Light and Power Company until November 1942. Ruth was united in marriage to Clark Tornholm on November 12, 1942 in N. Augusta, South Carolina. While Clark was in the military, they were stationed at Camp Gordon, Augusta Georgia, Fort Dix, New Jersey, Elkins West Virginia, and back to Fort Dix. Clark was shipped out to the Pacific Theater and Ruth moved back to Clarinda with her mother. She was employed at the POW camp in Clarinda for 2 years. When Clark returned from the war, they moved to Red Oak. She was employed by Iowa-Nebraska Light and Power for one year before they moved to a farm at Morton Mills, Iowa. After several years, they moved to a rental farm southeast of Red Oak for two years and then to the Lisle Corporation Farm north of Stanton where they lived for 14 years. They purchased their farms from Erval and Julia Donohue and Raymond and Doris Palmquist. They lived on the farm until 1986 when they moved into Red Oak. During this same time Ruth worked for the Red Oak Community School District at the Inman Building as a secretary. Then she worked for Uniroyal, Inc. for 10 years as secretary to the Production Superintendent and the Plant Manager retiring in 1983. She was a member of the First Covenant Church, Covenant Women, Board member of the American Red Cross, and a volunteer for the Blood Mobile. Clark and Ruth enjoyed playing cards with their friends, Pat and Gladys Dedrickson, Archie and June Lindburg, and Donovan and Louise Thoren. They also enjoyed going on bus tours to historic places of the country. Clark and Ruth moved to Regency retirement residence and Clark preceded Ruth in death on October 4, 2000. While at Regency, Ruth still enjoyed playing cards and other games with her new neighbors.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; her husband: Clark; sister: Alice Cade; sisters-in-law: Esther Tornholm, Louise Rydberg, and Edna Tornholm; brothers-in-law: Ted Tornholm, Norman Tornholm, Linn Brown, Glen Cade, Johnny Milleson, and Merrill Thompson. Survivors include her daughter: Janet Maguire and husband Jack of Austin, Texas; son: Phil Tornholm and wife Deb of Clarinda, Iowa; grandchildren: Dean Russell Hansen of Austin, TX; Erin Rachel Baldwin and husband Andy of Eden Prairie, MN; and Megan Lynn Tornholm of Clarinda, IA; 2 sisters: Hope Milleson of Clarinda, IA; and Elizabeth Thompson of New Market, IA; sisters-in-law: Jane Brown of Overland Park, KS; and Jane Tornholm of Hendersonville, NC; brothers-in-law: Leonard Tornholm and wife Elsie of Red Oak, IA; and Raymond Rydberg of Essex, IA and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Thursday, August 3, 2006 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel with Rev. Alan Dean officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 7-8 PM Wednesday, August 2, 2006 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the First Covenant Church or the Regency Retirement Residence.
