Gertrude E. “Gertie” Adams, age 93, of Red Oak, Iowa passed away Tuesday, July 18, 2006 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. Gertrude E. “Gertie” Adams was born March 8, 1913 in Villisca, Iowa the daughter of William and Ethel (Provost) Steward. She attended school in Villisca, Iowa. She was united in marriage to Robert Dean Adams on December 6, 1930 in Villisca, Iowa. With this union were born three children: Lynn, Roberta, and Pat. Gertie and Robert were married for nearly 53 years when he preceded her in death on May 6, 1983. Gertie worked at several local cafes in Red Oak including Lovit’s Café (through the war years). She then worked at Union Carbide for 23 years retiring in 1979. Gertie was very active driving all of her friends around Red Oak and the surrounding communities for coffee, lunch, and looking at Christmas decorations even in her later years. Gertie was a member of the First Christian Church, Mother’s Club, and other community clubs. Her greatest love was her family. She was big on family gatherings, food, and pictures. She loved to decorate her home for Christmas and have everyone come in for goodies. She loved to crochet blankets and sweaters and embroider pillow cases and hand towels. She was well known for her hats and high heels! She was a real sweetheart and a friend to all….Gertie knew no stranger.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; brother: Floyd Steward; and sister: Grace Herold. Survivors include her children: Lynn Adams and wife Jacky of Red Oak, Iowa; Roberta Burgus and husband Wayne of Yuma, Arizona; and Pat Maher and husband George of Red Oak, Iowa; grandchildren: Steve Adams and wife Lynn of Red Oak, Iowa; Jack Adams and wife Fredrica of Paris, France; Shelley Adams-Jones and husband Steve of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Mike Maher and wife Dee of Omaha, Nebraska; Kim Robinson of Red Oak, Iowa and Kristi Patrick of Red Oak, Iowa; great grandchildren: Clayton, Allison, and Ben Adams of Red Oak, Iowa; Floyd and Miles Adams of Paris, France; Wren and Ames Jones of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Patrick and Kelsey Maher of Omaha, Nebraska; Erik Robinson of Red Oak, Iowa; and Jill and Jamie Patrick of Red Oak, Iowa; sister: Ruth Rawlings of Cleveland, Texas and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Monday, July 24, 2006 at the First Christian Church with Rev. JoAnn Thomas officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 6-8 PM Sunday, July 23, 2006 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the First Christian Church.
