Jean Hughes, age 79, of Red Oak, Iowa passed away, Sunday, May 7, 2006 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. Velma “Jean” Hughes was born September 16, 1926 in Garfield Township of Montgomery County, Iowa the daughter of John and Harriett (Lake) Shaffer. She was raised in Montgomery County graduating from the Red Oak High School in 1944. She received her teachers training at the Red Oak Junior College. She taught in country schools and then Wales before her marriage to Harold Hughes on March 30, 1947 in Hiawatha, Kansas. She and Harold farmed in Montgomery County and in 1956 Jean returned to teaching at the Wales school. In 1960 she started teaching at Henderson until the Nishna Valley School was finished at which time she taught there. Jean and Harold moved into Henderson in 1975 and Jean retired from teaching in 1987. Harold preceded Jean in death on September 18, 2002. Jean moved into Red Oak in the spring of 2003. She was a member of the Wales Presbyterian Church. Jean also was known to be an avid baseball fan.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and her sister: Gayle Swanson. Survivors include her son: Robert Hughes and wife Cora of Wales, Iowa; daughters: Nancy Kay Naylor and husband Peter of Palm City, Florida; and Judy Poppell of Stuart, Florida; grandchildren: Chris Hughes and Bill Hughes both of Red Oak, Iowa; Jacqueline McBride and husband John of Winston Salem, North Carolina; and Lauren and Morgan Naylor both of Palm City, Florida; great grandchildren: Mary and Brooks McBride both of Winston Salem, North Carolina; brother: Harry Shaffer and wife Merle Jean of Emerson, Iowa; sisters: Doris Towne of Corning, Iowa; Blanche Sederburg and husband Milo of Red Oak, Iowa; and Ruby Lister of Red Oak, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

Memorials services will be held 2 PM Wednesday, May 17, 2006 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel with Rev. Michael Harvey officiating. Burial of the cremated remains will take place in the Gomer Cemetery at Wales, Iowa. Visitation with the family will be held from 7-8 PM Tuesday, May 16, 2006 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Red Oak Rescue Unit or the Wales Presbyterian Church.
