Richard Simpson, age 91, of Red Oak, Iowa passed away suddenly Thursday, March 16, 2006 at his residence. Richard Simpson was born June 11, 1914 in Bradolph, Illinois the son of William Howard and Nina (Spicer) Simpson. Richard graduated high school in Tipton, Iowa in 1932. He attended Coe College where he met Suneva Mayer while they were teaching at the State Juvenile Home in Toledo, Iowa. He graduated from Coe College in 1937 and was united in marriage to Suneva Mayer on August 23, 1937 in Emery, South Dakota. Richard then got his Masters Degree in Music Education from Drake University. His first job as band instructor was in Albia, Iowa in 1937. Richard and Suneva moved to Red Oak, Iowa in 1941. During the early years he taught band at Stanton in the evenings. Richard was very proud of the fact that the Red Oak band received a “one” rating at state contest for 26 consecutive years. Richard was a member of the Red Oak Elks Lodge where he was named Elk of the year and was past president of the Iowa Band Masters. Richard also judged many band contests and enjoyed theatre productions and the fine arts. He said that the finest honor he received was just living in Red Oak and teaching music.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; infant daughter: Susan; and son: Chris Simpson. Survivors include his wife: Suneva Simpson of Red Oak, Iowa; daughter: Rosie Simpson of Omaha, Nebraska; three brothers: Roger Simpson and wife Mary of Iowa City, Iowa; Robert Simpson and wife Barbara of Couer d’Alene, Idaho; and Don Simpson and wife Donna of California; many nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 AM Wednesday, March 22, 2006 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Father Ken Gross celebrant. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Recitation of the Rosary will be held 7 PM Tuesday, March 21, 2006 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel with visitation with the family to follow.
