Jean Allen, 1917-2006

She was born Miriam Jean Kochersperger on March 14, 1917 at the farm of her father Frank Kochersperger, south of Emerson, Iowa. From the first, she always only went by “Jean”.

Her mother was Flora Reed Kochersperger of the Reed family of Oakland, Iowa. In Jean’s first year her father completed building his new farmhouse on the Kochersperger farmstead, and the family moved into it.

Jean was grateful to have graduated from high school at the age of 15 and to never again have to attend any school of any kind.

She and Joe Allen of Climax, Iowa were married on August 10, 1939 and went through thicks and thins for the next sixty-seven years until death parted them on March 8, 2006.

Jean’s father died in 1942 while Joe and Jean and their oldest son were quarantined for scarlet fever. Her mother died in 1970. In 1953, Jean’s only sibling, her beloved older sister Wanda Conrad died. For two years Wanda’s youngest child Richard lived with the Allen family. Jean loved him as a son.

Jean tended to divest herself of mementos. She left none to attract moths or be corrupted by rust. Whatever treasures she stored, she apparently stored in her heart.

She had serious medical ordeals in 1990 and 2001. She survived both scrapes with death to the relief and happiness of her family. When death came to her in 2006, at the ripe old age of eighty-eight, she rested away peacefully, with Joe sitting nearby—in that same farmhouse built eighty-seven years earlier by her father.

She had five sons, who loved her from start to finish and wished that she would live forever—and now mourn her passing. They survive her: Stan in Iowa, Clark and wife Elaine in Oregon, Keith and wife Darlene in Illinois, Perry in California, Noel and wife Paula in New York. Her grandchildren are Sheri, Kevin, David, Stephen, Jennifer, Crystal, Joseph, and Rachel. Her great grandchildren are Kyle, Jared, Trevor, Blake, Shannon, Chandler, Max, Jacob, Elizabeth and Devon. She is also survived by four nieces and two nephews—Clyda, Frank, Sara, Alys, Cynthia, and Richard. Jean was delighted by their visits over the years.

May the Lord make His Face ever to shine upon her.

Funeral services will be held 2 PM Monday, March 13, 2006 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel with Rev. Rick Sleyster officiating. Burial will be in the Emerson, Iowa Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the Emerson Fire Department and Rescue Unit.
