Orville Laird, age 89 of Elliott, IA passed away Tuesday, May 29, 2001 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. Orville Keith Laird was born June 5, 1911 in Lancaster County, Nebraska the son of C.R. and Flora (Hatcher)Laird. He was raised in Lancaster County and graduated from the Ashland, Nebraska High School in 1929. He was a member of the football team and the track team. He moved with his family to a farm near Elliott, Iowa in 1930. He worked on local farms until 1935 when he joined a pipeline construction crew. In 1942, he joined the U. S. Navy and after training was stationed in Norfolk, VA. His fleet was on Saipan waiting to invade Japan when the war ended. Orville was united in marriage to Mary Carson on December 19, 1942 in South Mills, NC. He was employed by Scarf Implement until 1954 when he became partner in the S & M Oil Company doing plumbing and heating. He retired in 1973.

Survivors include his wife: Mary Laird of Griswold, Iowa; two daughters: Sue Woods of Vancouver, WA and Nancy Moss of Elliott, IA. Five grandchildren: Carrie, Mike, Gary, Leslie and James. Five great-grandchildren. Two brothers: Glenn Laird of Prescott, IA and Nyal Laird of Waterman IL. Four sister: Doris Mellott of Red Oak, IA, Thelma Wynn of Riverton, IA, Lois Talbot of Lincoln, NE and Mary Francke of Lincoln, NE.
