Velma Jarrett Cooper, age 85, of Red Oak, Iowa passed away Tuesday, May 20, 2003 at the Good Samaritan Care Center after an extended illness. Velma Jarrett Cooper was born April 27, 1918 in Montgomery County, Iowa west of Red Oak, the daughter of Harry and Blenda (Erickson) Pehrson. She was raised in Montgomery County and attended Pleasant Dale Rural School. Velma was active in 4-H and won first place in the bread making demonstration at the Montgomery County Fair. She went on to the State and National Demonstrations. Velma graduated from Red Oak High School in 1935 and attended Red Oak Junior College. She was united in marriage to Roy Jarrett on August 24, 1946. They lived in Tennessee from 1946-1949 when they moved back to Red Oak. Velma graduated from Northwest Missouri Teachers College in 1966. She taught school throughout her own education at Coburg, Macedonia, Wales, and Red Oak where she taught for 22 years. She retired in 1980 after a total of 35 years of teaching. Roy preceded her in death on January 3, 1969. She later married Paul Cooper on August 3, 1973. Velma and Paul lived on the farm until 1980 when they moved into Red Oak. Paul preceded her in death on January 2, 1991. Velma was a member of the Rural Teachers Association, a lifetime member of the Iowa State Teachers Association and National Education Association, Delta Kappa Gamma, Red Oak Monday Club, J.U.G. Club, and the Red Oak Presbyterian Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands; 4 sisters: Olivett Werling, Fern Gammell, Irene Johnson, and an infant sister: Vivian Pehrson; and one brother: Leland Pehrson.

Survivors include her 4 sons: Thomas Jarrett of Red Oak, Iowa; Dennis Jarrett of Atlantic, Iowa; Donald Jarrett and his wife Cathy of Red Oak, Iowa; and Larry Cooper and his wife Wanda of Wales, Iowa; a sister-in-law: Virginia Pehrson of St. Paul, MN; 8 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held 10 AM Saturday, May 24, 2003 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel with Rev. Suzanne Hewett officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 7-8 PM Friday, May 23, 2003 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Red Oak Presbyterian Church.
