David Randall Howes, age 84, of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away Friday, December 17, 2021, at Montgomery County Memorial Hospital. David was born January 31, 1937, in Iowa City, Iowa. He was raised in Bedford, Iowa, graduating with the Bedford High School class of 1955. David was united in marriage to Sharron Longfellow on October 6, 1957, in Lenox, Iowa. He then served in the United States Army from December 1959 until March 1962. Dave and Sharron moved to Red Oak, Iowa, after Dave returned from his military service. He started as a meat cutter, worked for Hunts Super Value, and retired in 2001 from the United States Post Office as a Rural Mail Carrier.

Dave was a gifted artisan who loved to paint landscapes, do leather work, carve wood objects, and refinish furniture. His woodworking talents also included building furniture and other useful items from oak, his preferred medium. As a volunteer, he generously donated his time and talents, constructing furniture for the Red Oak Chamber of Commerce and the YMCA, including the Chamber parade cart. Most recently, his woodworking endeavors focused on building birdhouses, Covid mask hangers and many other items, which he gifted to others.

He enjoyed nature, watching birds and other animals, and spending time outdoors, tending to his yard and gardens. Fishing was also a passion, never passing a body of water without commenting on the fact that he was not, at that very moment, casting a line to see what he could catch.

Preceding him in death were his parents and nine siblings. Survivors include his wife: Sharron; daughter: Cynthia Baskin and husband Kenneth of Lake Charles, LA; son: Tracy Howes of St. Joseph, MO; sister: Ruth Marsh and husband Orville of Stanton, IA; brother: Richard Howes and wife Rozella of Ontario, WI; brother-in-law: Dr. Jack Longfellow and wife Dr. Diane of Broken Bow, NE; sisters-in-law: Mary Joe Simms-Owens of Bella Vista, AR and Carolyn Wilson and husband Wayne of Mt. Ayr, IA; and many other relatives and friends.
A private family graveside memorial service will be held at the Fairview Cemetery in Bedford, Iowa. Memorials are suggested to the Fairview Cemetery.
