Richard Lee Meggison, age 83, of Red Oak Iowa passed away Friday, December 17th, 2021, peacefully at home surrounded by his family. Dick was born August 13, 1938, in New Market, Iowa, the son of Howard and Mabel (Hinkle) Meggison. He attended school in Minnesota, Carbon, Iowa and received his 8th grade diploma from Sutherland Consolidated Schools. He then attended Red Oak High School. He later joined the United States Army where he served in the Vietnam War. During his military career, he was awarded: The National Defense Service Medal (1956); Good Conduct Medal (1956-1977); Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal (1968); Vietnam Service Medal with four bronze service stars (1968-1969); Bronze Star Medal (1969); Armed Forces Honor Medal, 2nd Class (Foreign Award) (1969); and the Army Accommodation Medal (1977). He retired after serving 21 years and 6 mos. as a Sergeant First Class E-7 Platoon Sergeant. Following his military career, he worked for the Federal Police Department as a Patrol Officer in Martinez, Sonoma and Ft. Ord California. In 1994, he retired from Civil Service.

Dick was united in marriage to Bok Ja Yoon in January 1961 in Seoul, Korea. Four children were born to this union: Kevin Lee, William Joseph, Lisa Suzanne, and Robert Jon. As a family, they lived in Korea, France, Hawaii, Kansas, California, and Iowa. Dick was later married to Kyung Cha Bae in Junction City, Kansas in 1976 and helped raise two children, Thomas Jerry and Frederick Edward.

In his later years, Richard returned to live in Red Oak, Iowa to be near family and to help raise his young grandchildren. He enjoyed spending time with all his Meggison, Fredericksen, and Hinkle cousins and was a frequent diner at his beloved Rainbow Café in town. Some of Dick’s greatest moments were spent in his Toyota Tundra pickup truck, either driving around town for fast food runs or on long road trips to his old stomping grounds in Junction City, Kansas.

Preceding him in death were his parents and stepfather, Mathias Weber; son, Robert Jon Meggison; and sibling Judith Anne Updegrove. Survivors include his brother Mark Weber (Linda); his children, Kevin Lee Meggison (Lisa Xa); William Joseph Meggison; Lisa Rice (William Curtis); and Fredrick Payne (Vicky Hill); 16 grandchildren: Matthew (Megan), Lani-Lee, Janelle, Candice, Kelly, Diana, Christina, Alec Wane (Christina), Ian Richard (Sarah Chun), Alissa Kalena-Lois, Trulia Leilani, Ciera, Elijah Joseph, Larick Meggison, Quintus Richard, and Zeke Frederick; and many other relatives and friends.

A celebration of life visitation will be held from 2-4 PM Wednesday, December 22, 2021, at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the family.
