Nancy Noble Murphy was born in Evanston, IL on March 29, 1925. Nancy passed away on May 27, 2021. She grew up spending much of her childhood sailing on Lake Michigan with her parents Helen and William, her brother Bill, and the family dog Sandy. It was her father, William Noble, who was instrumental in establishing the Sheridan Shore Yacht Club that is still flourishing today. He was its first Commodore.

Nancy attended New Trier High School in Winnetka, IL. Upon graduation Nancy attended Beloit College in Beloit, WI. She was a member of the Kappa Delta sorority. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree, she worked for Searle and Co. in Skokie, IL, in their research lab testing products for human use.

Nancy met her future husband, Tommy Murphy, on a blind date in 1955 arranged by Tommy’s cousin while Tommy was visiting his cousin in Evanston, IL. Nancy and Tommy were married three months later in October 1955 in Long Grove, IL. They made their permanent home in Red Oak, IA, where Tommy was editor and publisher of the Red Oak Express, the family business.

Nancy quickly became an active member of the Red Oak Community, enjoying golf, tennis, bridge club, and her daughters Marjorie and Marilyn. She became involved in Questers, served as the treasurer of the Montgomery County History Center, and was an active member of the Red Oak Country Club, and supporter of the local YMCA. She enjoyed playing card and board games with her friends and family. Dominoes, Scrabble, Gin Rummy, Manipulation, and Pictionary were among her favorites. Golf, tennis, and bridge club were weekly events. She continued to play Bridge well into her 90’s.

Nancy and her family enjoyed many summer vacations across the country, returning many times to their favorite camping site at Viking Lake. Nancy and Tommy were avid skiers and made several ski trips with their Red Oak friends. She also enjoyed annual summer trips to Okoboji with her tennis friends, Helen, RuthAnn, Fran, Barb, and Mary Jo.
Nancy and Tommy took Marjie and Marilyn to Europe while they were in high school. They traveled to Switzerland and Austria, giving their daughters exposure to life outside the U.S.

After Tommy’s passing in 1999, Nancy took numerous trips with her brother Bill. Destinations included Antarctica, Australia, New Zealand, Alaska, Hawaii, Ireland, England, the Panama Canal, Mexico, and Costa Rica. Nancy returned with many photographs and memories.
The memories continued with the birth of her grandchild, Jenni. Many years later, she welcomed two great grandchildren, Claire and Carson, into her family.

Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Helen Noble; husband, Tommy Murphy; brother, Bill Noble; sister-in-law, Helen Murphy; and step-granddaughter, Aimie Albertsen. Left to celebrate her memory are daughters Marjorie Murphy Albertsen (Marc) and Marilyn Noble Murphy (friend Doug), granddaughter Jenni Overton (Harrison), great grandchildren Claire and Carson Overton, step-granddaughter Joanne Albertsen (Daniel), Jim Petersen, and many friends and neighbors.

A celebration of life service will be held 2 PM Tuesday, June 1, 2021, at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Viewing and visitation with the family will be held from 6-8 PM Monday, May 31, 2021, at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel.
