James Howard “Jim” Geer, age 86 of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, May 19, 2021, at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital. Jim was born October 29, 1934 in Shambaugh, Iowa, the son of Charles and Elma (Howard) Geer. He was raised in rural Page County, Iowa, and graduated from Braddyville High School in 1953. Jim was united in marriage to Betty Blessing in June of 1954 and they farmed for 8 years. They lived in Clarinda and Stanton before moving to Red Oak where Jim worked for Union Carbide and later started a long career in law enforcement. He worked for the Red Oak Police Department, attended the academy, and then worked for Montgomery County Sheriffs Department retiring in 1993. Jim and Betty enjoyed camping and wintering in Arizona for many years. Jim also enjoyed spending time in Florida with his family. He was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church, the Red Oak Eagles, and the Mercantile Coffee Club. His hobbies included woodworking, working on his computer, cooking, telling stories, and spending time with his family.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; wife: Betty Geer on February 7, 2012; grandson: Adam Smith; son-in-law: Frank Miller; and brother-in-law: Donald Hunter. Survivors include his daughters: Carolyn Smith and husband Wesley of Sioux City, Iowa; Sharon Jansen and husband Richard of Tampa, FL; Jeannie Bruning and husband Terry of Red Oak, IA; and Laurie Miller of Kansas City, KS; grandchildren: Steven Smith of Sioux City, IA; Matthew Smith and wife Laura of Sioux City, IA; Michelle Grinnell of Tampa, FL; Jim Jansen and wife Joanna of Apollo Beach, FL; John Jansen of Tampa, FL; William Bruning and wife Brittany of Clarinda, IA; Brandon Bruning and wife Nicole of Villisca, IA; Thad Bruning and wife Bailey of Council Bluffs, IA; Aubrey Sherrfius and husband Chase of Kansas City, KS; and Autumn Draper of Kansas City, MO; great grandchildren: Devin, Derek, and Lilly Grinnell; Jake and Erik Jansen; Oliver, Myah, Kaylee, and Raelyn Bruning; Daniel Smith; and Rogan and Derek Sherrfius; sisters-in-law: Beverly Hunter of Charter Oak, IA and Geraldine Jamison and husband Dale of Decatur, TX and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held 10 AM Saturday, May 22, 2021, at the First United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 7-8 PM Friday, May 21, 2021, at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church.
