William F. “Spike” Young, age 90, of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away Monday, October 22, 2018 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital. Spike was born January 6, 1928 in Macedonia, Iowa the son of Frank and Blanche (Comstock) Young. He was raised in Montgomery County and graduated from Villisca High School in 1946. He served in the United States Army during two different war periods: World War II and Korea. Before he left for his second enlistment, Spike was united in marriage to Betty Rhamy on November 4, 1950 in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Upon his return from service they made their home on a farm Northeast of Red Oak for a year then moved to Elliott, Iowa for a year. Spike then bought a grinder and started a milling business moving to Red Oak in 1954. He operated Young Milling until 1978 when he sold out. A short time later, Spike started Spike’s Small Engine Repair and retired in 1994. He enjoyed reading western and spy novels, boating, water skiing, square dancing, and playing cards. Spike always worked hard but also managed to relax enjoying many camping trips and winters in Texas. He loved spending time with friends and was a very devoted family man.

Preceding him in death were his parents; brothers: Kenneth, James, and Darwin; and sisters: Thelma, Ruth, and Ruby. Survivors include his wife: Betty Young of Red Oak, Iowa; children: Harvey Young and wife Jacqueline of Newman Grove, Nebraska; Harold Young and wife Dory of Columbus, Nebraska; Nancy Schnormeier and husband Alan of Bellevue, Nebraska; and Gloria Thompson and husband Norman of Red Oak, Iowa; 9 grandchildren; many great grandchildren including Macie Gilleland of Red Oak, Iowa who lived with Spike and Betty; sisters: Shirley Baker of Clarinda, Iowa and Virginia Peterson of Red Oak, Iowa; sisters-in-law: Ann Ribb of Springfield, Missouri and Audrey Rhamy of Escondido, California; many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and many friends.

A celebration of life service will be held 2 PM Friday, October 26, 2018 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Burial of the cremated remains will be in the Evergreen Cemetery with military honors.
