Douglas Lee Turner, age 72, of Elliott, Iowa, passed away Friday, October 5, 2018 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital. Doug was born January 6, 1946 in Red Oak, Iowa, the son of Philip Cyrus and Viola Ruth (Boan) Turner. Doug grew up on the Turner family farm, the middle child of five children. He was active on the farm helping his father and brothers with the crops and animals. He was in Sherman Atoms 4-H club, where he took pride in raising and showing cattle. His family often attended the Iowa State Fair. At the age of 2, Doug won the Iowa State Fair rural boys’ division baby contest. Doug attended elementary school at Stennett, Iowa, graduating from Griswold High School in 1964 where he was a stand-out athlete and musician. Douglas was a four sport athlete, earning 16 varsity letters, during his high school career. He excelled in football, basketball, track and baseball. After graduation he attended Iowa Western Community College in Clarinda, Iowa. Doug enlisted in the United States Army in March of 1967. He served in the 1st Infantry Division, “The Big Red One” out of Ft. Riley, Kansas. He served in Vietnam where he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and Army Commendation Medal. He was honorably discharged on September 1, 1968 with the rank of tech sergeant. Doug was united in marriage to Marla Lee Miller on May 26, 1967 in Elliott, Iowa. Doug and Marla lived in several states including: Texas, Arizona, Indiana, and Missouri, before settling in Elliott, Iowa. Doug worked for LeRoy Baker at Baker Transfer and later purchased the business naming it Turner Brothers Trucking. Doug operated Turner Trucking his entire life. He took his last load of grain on September 21, 2018. He also drove a school bus for the Red Oak and Griswold School Districts and was a rural mail carrier for the United States Post Office from 1987- 2014. After retirement from the post office Doug continued to operate Turner Trucking and helped his son, Mark operate the Turner and Miller farms, along with working on Dixon lawn mowers and truck and auto repairs. There was never an engine that Doug could not fix. Doug enjoyed singing in barber shop quartets. He sang lead for the Newtones and Signature Sound quartets. He was a former member of the Nishna Valley Chordsmen in Atlantic and Omaha. He was active in Grist Mill in Macedonia, performing in several shows including “The Music Man” and has performed at the Wilson Performing Arts Center in Red Oak. Douglas played slow pitch softball with his brothers in several communities and had a Turner Trucking softball team for several years. Doug was raised in the Elliott Church of Christ. Over the years, he served as a deacon, trustee, elder and currently was chairman of the board. He was also a member of the Elliott Business and Betterment. Most recently, Doug was proud to be a member of the Iowa/Nebraska Honor Flight.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife of 51 years: Marla of Elliott, Iowa; children: Michelle Cross and husband Chuck of Indianola, Iowa; Barbara Gilliland and husband Toby of Red Oak, Iowa; Dawn LeRette and husband Brian of Red Oak, Iowa; and Mark Turner and special friend Lori Smith of Elliott, Iowa; grandchildren: Mitch, Chase, and Megan Cross of Indianola, Iowa; Danielle Terry and husband David of Shenandoah, Iowa; Tanner and Jaydan Gilliland of Red Oak, Iowa; and Joshua LeRette of Red Oak, Iowa; sister: Diane McCunn of Orion, Illinois; brothers: Larry Turner and wife Judy of Elliott, Iowa; Todd Turner and wife Terri of Wales, Iowa; and Tracy Turner and wife Sherri of Elliott, Iowa; many cousins, nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held 11 AM Friday, October 12, 2018, at the Elliott Church of Christ in Elliott, Iowa. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 5-7 PM Thursday, October 11, 2018 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel in Red Oak. Memorials are suggested to the Elliott Church of Christ or the Elliott First Responders.
