Helen K. Sippel, age 99, of Red Oak, Iowa formerly Mokena, Illinois, passed away Monday, June 5, 2017 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak, Iowa. Helen was born July 7, 1917 and lived in Mokena for 97 years. Born at her grandmother's farmhouse along Route 30, she was the only child of Luella and Fred Cappel, also life-long residents of Mokena. When she was about 12 years old, her family moved into a home two houses south of St. John's Church. She lived there until her marriage to Richard Sippel of Mokena on June 8, 1941. They bought a wooded lot on La Porte Road where they built a home in 1950. There they raised two children, Sarah and Roger. After Richard died in 1987, Helen continued to live alone in their home for the next 27 years. At the age of 97, she moved to Red Oak, Iowa to be closer to family and share in special events and activities.

Helen advocated for quality education and devoted her career to teaching. She graduated from Joliet Township High School and studied to receive her teaching certificate. In 1938, she began teaching at Ross School. This one-room schoolhouse required that she teach all grades 1st thru 8th. She taught there for several years and briefly left teaching to raise her family. When her children started school in 1958, she returned to teach at the Summit Hill School, the last one-room school in Will County. Helen taught there until the Tinley Park School District built Fernway School. She and her students then transferred to Fernway where she taught until her retirement in 1979 after a 28-year career. An avid reader, Helen was one of the original trustees of the Mokena Public Library.

Survivors include her children: Roger Sippel and wife Martha of Lone Tree, CO and Sarah Crisp and husband Ron of Red Oak, IA; grandchildren: Rachel Mathis and husband Rob of Omaha, NE and Rebecca Easter and husband Sherman of Bellevue, NE; great grandchildren: Nicholas and Lindsey Mathis and Hendrix Easter; and many other relatives and friends.

A celebration of life service will be held 10:30 AM Saturday, June 17, 2017 at First Congregational United Church of Christ in Red Oak. Memorials are suggested to St. Johnís United Church of Christ, Mokena Public Library or Mokena Marley F.I.S.H. Resale Shop.
