Mary Louise Armstrong, age 87, of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away Saturday, May 16, 2015 at the Red Oak Healthcare Community. Mary was born May 15, 1928 in Stennett, Iowa the daughter of Charles and Fern (Henderson) Umphreys. She attended school in Stennett and Red Oak. Mary was united in marriage to Lyle E. Armstrong on August 5, 1944 in Independence, Missouri. After marriage they lived in Arizona and Missouri before moving back to Red Oak in 1963. They moved to Elliott, Iowa in 1965 where they lived until moving to Stanton, Iowa in 1990. Lyle preceded Mary in death in 1991 and Mary moved to Acorn Acres in Red Oak where she has been a resident for 24 years. Over the years, Mary worked at Ross' Super Value in Griswold, the US Post Office in Elliott, and CDS in Red Oak. She loved to read, crochet, embroider, sew, knit, fish, camp, cook, play cards, and tend to her flowers. Her family describes hers as loving, caring, happy, loyal, compassionate, active, classy, powerful, and determined.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband: Lyle E. Armstrong; sister: Betty Hatfield, and brothers: James and Robert Umphreys. Survivors include her children: Lyle Armstrong of Oak Harbor, WA; Margaret Renn and husband Ralph of Red Oak, IA; and Mary Katherine Fort and husband Lonnie of Red Oak, IA; grandchildren: Lyle E.A. "Drew" Armstrong and wife Mary of Red Oak, IA; Jennifer Smith and husband Kenny of Charlestown, WV; Joshua Armstrong of Oak Harbor, WA; Amy Renn and fiance Tony Akers of Red Oak, IA; Kelley Kinser and husband Nick of Elliott, IA; Andrea Aba and husband Mikko of St. Helena, CA; and Matthew Fort of Shenandoah, IA; great grandchildren: Kaylee, Kendell and Kobe Smith; Alex Armstrong; Brianna Dozier-Wolcott and fiance Christian Meeks; and Damon and Brandon Dozier-Wolcott; great great grandchild: Aiden Meek; brother: Ray Umphreys and wife Bonnie of Palm Coast, FL; sister: Jean Hofer and husband Jerry of Renner, SD; many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Tuesday, May 19, 2015 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel with Pastor Len Taylor officiating. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery at Elliott, Iowa. Visitation with the family will be held from 6-8 PM Monday, May 18, 2015 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or the St. Jude Children's Hospital.
