Charles Elbert Wetzel, age 86, of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away Saturday, January 31, 2015 at his residence. Charles was born August 14, 1928 in Detroit, Michigan, the son of Charles and Ella (Stewart) Wetzel. When he was four years old, the family moved to his mother's family farm east of Henderson, Iowa. Charles attended and graduated from Wales Lincoln High School in 1947. He was united in marriage to Betty Mensen in 1953. They have lived all of their married life in Red Oak. Charles worked for Thos. D. Murphy Co./ JII for 42 years. He and his wife, Betty were the parade marshals as the representatives for JII when businesses were recognized during Red Oak Junction Days. He was the captain of the JII bowling team for 36 years and bowled with the team for 50 years, just retiring from bowling when he was 80 years old. He traveled to bowling tournaments across the state of Iowa until he was 79 years old. Charles was a member of the 15-20 year club where he participated in activities to help raise money for their club activities. The huge collection of JII photographs at the Montgomery County History center was donated by Charles. He was a long time Red Oak Eagles Lodge member where he was chosen as the state of Iowa Eagle of the year. He was in charge of setting up the Eagles Haunted House for many years. He put up an extensive array of Christmas lights throughout the Eagles building each Christmas. Charles also took care of the Eagles lawn with his own equipment and was always willing to help with anything that needed to be done. Charles won the Ak-Sar-Ben Good Neighbor Award for helping a disabled friend. He was known for his kindness and huge heart. If anyone asked him for help, he would be there.

Preceding him in death were his parents and twin sister: Charlotte Wetzel in 2007. Survivors include his wife: Betty of Red Oak, IA; son: Clay Lynn Wetzel and wife Kathy of Red Oak, IA; daughter: Betty Linn Wright of Red Oak, IA; grandchildren: Valarie Raney and husband Jamie of Elk Horn, IA; Heath Wetzel, Derek Wetzel and wife Jamie, Adam Wetzel and wife Megan, Eric Snyder, and Kyle Snyder and wife Marta all of Omaha, NE; sister: Donna Corliss of Red Oak, IA; nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Tuesday, February 3, 2015 at Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 7-8 PM Monday, February 2, 2015 at Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Red Oak Eagles Lodge.
