Richard Dean Carlson, Jr., age 55 of St. Cloud, Minnesota formerly of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away June 10, 2013 in Minnesota. Richard was born July 25, 1957 in Birmingham, Alabama to Richard and Joy (Burnison) Carlson. Richard made his career in the United States Army, from which he retired in 1997 as a Master Sergeant. He made his home eventually in Fort Campbell, KY where his eldest daughter Jennifer (Carlson) Pekarek was born. When he was stationed overseas again in Korea, he was able to come home for the birth of his youngest daughter Amber Carlson at Offutt Air Force Base in NE. Richard served his country from 1975 to 1997. He was an accomplished solider and dedicated to serving his country and fellow troops. In 1983, he won one of the Army’s most prestigious awards to be given to an NCO, and was named NCO OF THE YEAR at Fort Campbell, KY. He also won many honors for his bravery, including a bronze star for his service in Desert Storm. He was stationed at Fort Snelling when he retired from the Army. Most recently he worked for the U.S. Postal Service. Richard’s greatest pride and joy was his family, as he was a loving and dedicated father and grandfather. Richard was also a great “Papa” to his three grandchildren. They loved and looked forward to their special time with their “Papa”. He enjoyed gardening, cooking and was an avid football fan and loved watching Da Bears and his beloved Iowa Hawkeyes with his family. Also close to his heart were his dogs Cocoa, Chester and Lily who kept him busy and comfortable. His family was the light of his life. He will be missed terribly but everyone knows he is at peace.

Survivors include his children Jennifer and Jeremy Pekarek of St. Cloud, MN; and Amber Carlson of St. Cloud, MN; grandchildren Calvin, Arabella and Jasper; brother and sisters, Cynthia and Richard Tucker of Winterset, IA; Stephen Carlson of Stanton, IA; Susan and Scott Geer of Stanton, IA; and Carrie and Brian Rinehart of Anamosa, IA and many nieces and nephews. Richard was preceded in death by his parents Richard and Joy and his brother, Gary Carlson.

A memorial service will be held 2pm Saturday June 22, 2013 at Fremont Lutheran Church at Nyman, Iowa. Burial will be in the Mt. Hope Cemetery at Nyman.
