LuRay C. Pederson, age 70, of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away Saturday, November 10, 2012 at the Good Samaritan Care Center in Red Oak. LuRay Carmen Pederson was born May 27, 1942 in Fremont, Nebraska the daughter of Jess and Alyce (Black) Landholm. She was raised in Fremont graduating from Fremont High School. LuRay earned her Master’s in Music and Elementary Education from Wayne State University in Wayne, Nebraska. On August 8, 1964, LuRay was united in marriage to Stanley Pederson in Fremont, Nebraska. They lived in Marietta, Ohio and Denton, Texas before moving to Red Oak in 1978 when LuRay and Stan purchased the Gold Crown Inn Restaurant. Upon moving to Red Oak, LuRay began her career with Red Oak Schools, first as a substitute teacher. In 1983, she became a teacher of music. She directed musical shows for elementary students and coordinated students to march in parades while singing songs she had written. She later became director of special education and the elementary talented and gifted program. She also served as administrative assistant to the superintendant. In 1993, she became principal at Washington Elementary and director of the special needs program. LuRay initated the “WE CARE volunteer program” and the “Love Our Kids” program in the schools. After retiring from Red Oak Schools she taught band for Nishna Valley Schools. In 1998, LuRay was nominated for the State of Iowa Elementary Principal of the Year.

LuRay was active in the community. She was on the founding board of the Montgomery County Family YMCA, where she traveled to Chicago to attend leadership and board development training. She remained an active member of the Y board. LuRay served many years on the Montgomery County Fair Board where she scheduled fair entertainment and coordinated the Bill Riley Talent show. She was inducted into the Montgomery County Fair Hall of Fame in 1995. LuRay was a member of the Red Oak Chamber of Commerce and the chamber board. She organized entertainment for Junction Days, announced parades and chaired Junction Days twice. In 1993, she was honored as Junction Days Grand Marshall. She was the pianist for the Elliott Church of Christ for many years. LuRay was passionate about her students, music and family.

Preceding her in death were her parents and a brother: Landy Landholm. She is survived by her husband: Stanley Pederson of Red Oak; children: Sonja Keith of Council Bluffs, Iowa and Leslie Smith of Red Oak, Iowa; Shayne Pederson and wife Amye of Langley Airforce Base, VA; and Lucas Pederson and fiancé Christina of Omaha, Nebraska; 15 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild; brother: Larry Landholm of LaMesa, California; sister: Lynette Harnisch and husband Gerald of Fremont, Nebraska; sister-in-law: Cheryl Landholm of Las Vegas, Nevada.

Memorial services will be held at 2 PM Monday, November 26, 2012 at Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel in Red Oak with Pastor Mel Smith officiating. Visitation with the family will be held from 5-7 PM Sunday, November 25, 2012 at Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Burial of cremated remains will take place at a later date.

Memorials are suggested in lieu of flowers to the LuRay Pederson Memorial Fund.
